Just look at Oregon
Mike White was at Oregon for 9 seasons and led the Ducks to five Pac-12 championships and five Women’s College World Series appearances while compiling a 435-111-1 (.794) record. He said he was happy making a base salary of $237,500, along with $90,000 in performance bonuses as the Ducks won their fifth Pac-12 championship in the past six seasons and advanced to the WCWS for the fifth time in seven seasons.
Texas took notice last summer and offered White $505,000 to change schools. Oregon said they couldn't match the offer and White left for Texas. The fallout has been significant for Oregon as numerous players have left the program.
For comparison, the Roanoke Times reported in June that "D’Amour agreed to a letter of appointment covering the next five seasons. He will have a base salary of $130,000 his first year, with his pay increasing to $170,000 for the final year of the deal."
Pete has stated many times that VT is his dream job - I have no reason not to believe him. But that's a potentially huge salary gap should he continue to be successful and other schools come after him.
We just have to trust Whit to do all he can to keep him - many times it's not just about the money.
