I think so, but I'd use JMU as an example

since they're local. JMU didn't build a Top 10-type program over night. It took years. Klaes-Baucombe is in her 13th season at JMU. JMU built their program mostly on 3-star players with an occasional 4-star, very similar to Tech right now. JMU has played challenging non-conference schedules, especially vs. regional ACC schools.

Boston isn't a high school hotbed like Baltimore-DC, Long Island, … but the area has talent. Northwestern in Chicago isn't located in a lacrosse hotbed either but they won 7 NCAA WLAX championships between 2005-2012. UNC has won 2 and they aren't in an area loaded with girls high school lacrosse talent. Florida has had success too. Most schools that have won national championships are either academically prestigious universities with loads of scholarship money or/and located in areas rich in high school lacrosse talent. Maryland and Syracuse are similar to Tech academically, but highly rated prospects sign with them because they have national championship trophies. BC and JMU would be the best programs for John Sung to emulate, BUT Sung marches to the beat of a different drummer. Sung is innovative. He's always looking at ways to improve not just Tech WLAX but women's lacrosse as a sport. IMHO, I believe that Sung evaluates talent as well as any top-tier lacrosse coach in Division 1. Sung likes challenges. That is what attracted him to Tech. If Sung wanted to improve recruiting, I'd think he'd like to have more success on Long Island. Like any coach, he'd like to sign more players like Paige Petty but that is going to take time.

As for John Sung's future at Tech, I'd love to see him stay here for a long time like JMU's Klaes-Baucombe. My concern with Sung is that he's a builder of programs and he may become bored with Tech and look for another challenge, especially in Big 10 country (he's a Michigan native). Like Buzz Williams, Sung has proven that you can win games against Top 20 programs in Blacksburg. If Sung departed, at least our program would be a more attractive job. I never understood why women's lacrosse struggled at Tech, especially when we joined the ACC. Before Whit Babcock became AD, Tech simply didn't care about having a successful WLAX program.
