Even though UConn tore down their on campus football stadium
to have the state build a new one 45 mins (maybe 1 hour due to traffic) away from campus? To put the UConn main campus in Storrs and the football stadium in East Hartford into perspective, it would be similar to VT tearing down Lane Stadium so it could build a new practice facility for the basketball teams and have the state build Lane Stadium 2.0 in the northern part of Roanoke or Salem (where the NCAA used to play the DIII National Championship Game in football).
The reason I bring up the stadium situation is because I believe UConn quickly decided it wouldn't be a sound investment to upgrade its on campus stadium from 16K to the minimum 30K requirement in order to compete in the DI-A subdivision. At least I believe there were other issues with the stadium besides capacity. So even if UConn decided it wanted to switch subdivisions, it was still depended upon the state to build them a brand new stadium that met the minimum DI-A requirements. I could be wrong, but I don't see the state building the new stadium on UConn's campus especially if the state was trying to lure the Patriots from MA. So odds are good that the new stadium would have ended up in its current location or at least somewhere around the Hartford area.
