Athletics has been a financial liability at Maryland for a long time

Its a major urban commuters university. When they hired Lau the provost from Illionois (a rural but nationally ranked land grant), it was like oil and vinegar. He had no connection to his peer schools (i.e. ACC), so when he saw the massive losses, he jumped to what he knew, his buddies in the big 10 and they gave them a life preserver. Now its a noose.

The sad thing is if he went to greensboro right after he got there with the problem, the ACC would have taken care of one of their founding members, (it would have been quiet and no one would have known and all would be good.
