I have read through the current NCAA DI bylaws.

Not so much for fun, but because I have made multiple references to bylaws on various threads on here. As far as I can tell, there is no bylaw requiring divisions in basketball and football to be the same. In fact, I can't find a bylaws requiring divisions in basketball. The only place I have found any reference to divisions (in the sense of breaking up a conference into groups is Bylaw 17.10.5.2(b) Annual Exemptions [FBS/FCS] Conference Championship Game. If a conference happens to use divisions in another sport (i.e. what the SEC did at one time in basketball) is because the conference decided this method made things easier for scheduling purposes. When the SEC was 12 members and used 2 divisions in basketball, then its scheduling methodology was as follows:

5 divisional opponents X 2 = 10 games
6 cross-divisional opponents X 1 = 6 games (3 home and 3 away..flip the following year)
total number of conference games = 16 games
