As I said in my response to Maroon Baboon there are potential issues

the conference would need to deal with if it is considering adding San Diego State to the East Division. In fact the Pac-16's situation wouldn't be any different than the ACC's situation with the 4 NC schools. Would the Pac-16 want to place 1 Cali school on an island? Would San Diego State accept being on an island or would the Aztecs want either Hawai'i or Fresno State to join them on the island? Plus, from a network standpoint the conference wouldn't expand its footprint with the addition of San Diego State.

The Pac-12 should realize by now that the Pac-16 already has its West Division in the form of the Pac-8. From a marketing standpoint, the conference has to realize it wouldn't be a smart move to only add 1 Cali school to the East Division. Even adding 2 Cali schools to the East Division might make things confusing especially if San Diego State is more "west" than UCLA and/or USC. The Pac-12 probably has a good idea of how for people (especially non-ACC fans) to know which schools are members of the Atlantic Division and Coastal Division, so the zipper model is probably out (among other reasons). It is even confusing for non-Big Ten to know which Indiana school is a member of the East Division and which one is a member of the West Division.
