Summer traffic ... especially August ... is not indicative of real traffic.

Commute times are probably 65% of what they will be once school starts again. For the area you will be working in you could either live in Maryland but the downside to that is you live in Maryland.

Or you could live in the Franconia/Alexandria area and probably still have a reasonably easy commute. Have had friends that lived in the Kingstowne area and liked it there.
