Reduced from what? Teams are currently playing their rival 0 times as OOC

games. If Team 1A and Team 2A are currently cross-division rivalries, then Team 1A's cross-division schedule rotation would look like this if the protected cross-division game was eliminated.

Year 1: @ Team 2A, Team 2B
Year 2: Team 2A, @ Team 2B
Year 3: @ Team 2C, Team 2D
Year 4: Team 2C, @ Team 2D
Year 5: @ Team 2E, Team 2F
Year 6: Team 2E, @ Team 2F
Year 7: @ Team 2G, Team 2A
Year 8: Team 2G, @ Team 2A

*second rotation would start with Team 2B

So based on this model VT and UVA would have to schedule 4 OOC games with each other. Even if the ACC decided that a team should play everyone 1 time before playing the second game in the rotation, VT and UVA would still have to schedule 4 OOC games with each other. The only difference is they would be more spread out instead of 4 years in a row.

As I said before if the Committee frowns upon conference foes scheduling OOC games against each other and the ACC is the only power conference doing it, then you can bet every ACC fanbase would be hot underneath the collar if their team got left out of the Playoff simply because they didn't use that slot to play a team from another power conference/whatever Independents are considered P5.
