Dooley did not have the advantage of a conference schedule. As an

independent, it was difficult to get good conference teams to come to Blacksburg. And UR/W&M/VMI were traditional games much of the alumni still wanted to play at that time.

I'm not saying Dooley would have scheduled any differently if he could, but if he truly wanted a tougher schedule there were a lot of challenges.
