For public schools, if state governments start reducing the amount

of funding they provide to their schools, then the presidents may start to rethink their position about the number of games. Keep in mind that some states allow taxpayer dollars to be used to fund capital collegiate athletic projects. Whereas other states (like Virginia) don't allow taxpayer dollars to be used for those projects.

Something else to keep in mind is when classes are starting. For schools on a semester schedule, if more of them are starting 1-2 weeks earlier, then at some point presidents could see it as an opportunity to start the college football season earlier. If majority of the schools want to keep their biggest rival for Thanksgiving weekend, then they could decide to add games at the beginning of the season to increase the number of games played during the regular season. Or they could keep the number of regular season games at 12/13, push the regular season up 1-2 weeks, and use the extra weeks at the end for postseason. In theory it could mean playing the national championship game on New Year's Day or the day after instead of 7-10 days after New Year's Day.

Now I don't think the presidents will increase the number of games played as long as head injuries is a hot topic. However, if the power conferences break away, then the presidents could use that opportunity to restructure entire football season (including reducing the number of regular season games played so it could add postseason games). Since there is so much that is still up in their air on the landscape of college athletics, I am not sure anything can be completely ruled out as a possibility (even if it is only a very remote possibility now).
