if ND can get in the playoff in the next couple of years I would agree with you

but the longer they go without a cfp appearance under the current format and the more the playoff selectees come from the P5, the more opposing coaches will be able to recruit against them.

as we've seen at VT, it is not a difficult or lengthy process to slip to winning less than double digits, and then to moderate bowl interest, etc.

without a clear path to the playoffs, they'll eventually lose virtually every recruiting battle for elite recruits.

their coaches will let their admin know when they need to get into a conference
