Bought my house for $136K 24 years ago. It is my second house. My first house I bought when I was single and sold 4 years later after I got married. The gain I made on the sale of the 1st house allowed me to make a 25% down payment on the 2nd house. Initially had a 30 year mortgage but refinanced twice and ended up with a 15 year mortgage that I paid off 1.5 years ago. My last mortgage payments were approx. $1K/month. Now I use that money to fund my kid's college room/board. Two of my kids have graduated and the 3rd will be a junior next fall, so the end is in sight.
