With the benefit of allowing the kid to investigate something they care for

We loved science fairs in our house. Kids got excited because we got to go deep into something the kids cared about. The outcome wasn't the driver, it was the journey. My son still talks about one of his, he investigated the best kindling source for starting a camp fire. We spent weeks collecting materials, designing the experiments and then an evening testing the intensity and duration of different fuels (a shredded cotton tshirt was the overall winner BTW).

It was something that was of interest to him at that point in his life and he got to dig deeper into it than he could have hoped.
