I believe the winner of any conference deserves a spot


they have at least won something to get in. They have done more than the 7th or 8th place team in a major conference.

The idea that taking the AQs out and making it the "best" 68 (64 because the whole reason for the extra 4 was accommodating another AQ with the creation of the AAC when the BigEast split) just makes the process more silly. Rather than 36 at large, you now have 64 at large and rather than picking between a bunch of 7th and 8th place finishers in conferences who have 18 or so wins, you are picking among 10th and 11th place finishers, who happened to have .500 records (many padded by early season cupcakes).

And in the end, a bunch of teams who have proven they can lose a lot of games will be whining they got slighted when another team that proved they could lose a lot of games gets in and they don't.
