FWIW Rivalry Week used to be a 2 weekend event before conferences

started banning teams from having a bye week the week before Conference Championship Weekend. History is the reason Iowa and Iowa State play in September than during Rivalry Week. Historically speaking Iowa would alternate between playing either Minn or Wisky the weekend before Thanksgiving Weekend as the final game of the regular season. While those 2 schools played each other Thanksgiving Weekend. Iowa State typically finished its season playing either Mizzou or Kansas State for Rivalry Week. During the Big 8 days, it was typically Kansas State because Kansas would play Mizzou for Rivalry Week and Kansas State in October or early November. When the Big XII was formed, the opponent would rotate depending on when the Kansas-Kansas State game was scheduled.

Given that there are only so many hours in a day, the maximum consumption will still be limited for live TV. Plus, consumers may opt to watch a non-rivalry game that weekend instead of a rivalry game. For example, I may chose to watch the VT-Wake game live instead of the Michigan-Minnesota or Indiana-Illinois rivalry game. Now if you factor in replay feature, then it kind of makes the maximum consumption argument moot because a person could end up watching all the rivalry games for an entire season at some point in time.
