The harder thing to put a finger on is

Star rankings are also an indicator of the performance ceiling. 3 star recruits are expected to be contributors. 4 star recruits are expected to be NFL draft picks. 5 star recruits are expected to be first round NFL type talent. Those expectations look way off when judging in hindsight because while an individual 5 star has a higher probability of being a first round talent, globally the first round will be comprised of more 3 and 4 star guys just because of the volume of individuals in the pool. At the end of the day, an individual rating is BS. It also renders the fuss over individual recruits sort of worthless (perhaps truly transcendent talent excluded). However, what cannot be argued is that to achieve at the highest level in college football, a team must have a high blue chip ratio on the roster.
