I genuinely wonder what the total societal cost of fighting Covid will

be. And once it's all added up, will it have been worth it?

Between business shutdowns, lost jobs, stimulus spending, inflation, supply chain disruptions, a generation of kids whose education got hosed, lost travel (business and pleasure), free vaccines, etc. etc. etc. etc. the final tally has got to be in the tens of trillions, if not approaching 100T.

Just as a thought experiment, what if we'd just said wash your hands, wear a mask indoors, and spent all that money solving a different problem (say, Cancer, for example). Would society be better or worse off?
