I'm reading "Make it Stick" right now.
Very interesting book about motivation, learning, and techniques to make ideas and training last. It discusses education quite a bit and how "easy" learning is done in short-term memory and often doesn't last past a few days. Do make ideas or concepts "stick," learning needs to have an element of challenge.
Remote learning is not the type of challenge necessary to make things stick. In fact, teachers and systems focused on making quick learning easy to aid parents and students. This actually made things worse for long term recall. The type of challenges that make learning stick are student led learning and teaching. Basically one student kinda gets the topic and works with his or her peers to solve problems or teach the other students the concept. These types of opps. have been completely eliminated in remote learning.
Students need in person learning, by and large. They need to struggle and they need to see those around them struggle. We learn through adversity not from ease.
