My parents have had 2. Both were dog aggressive and killed every varmint


in the backyard. They live in VB, and that consisted of rabbits and the occasional rat. They were very loving to my parents, but their current dog is a different breed. The last dachshund also had terrible back issues, which I understand is fairly common. My wife hates this breed, mostly because my parents' dogs always nipped our dogs.

As edge stated, the personalities will all vary. You'll have to spend time with the dog first, if a rescue. If you get a puppy, you have some opportunity to mold the dog, but I don't believe that's an absolute.
