The AAC got weaker
They added some football talent-rich regions but Rice isn't Houston and FAU isn't UCF. The AAC definitely wanted to stay relevant in Texas. It was pretty much a power move to remain the 6th best football conference. CUSA and Sun Belt will have to duke it out for #2 G-5 conference in the South. The recent AAC additions say they aren't thrilled about adding schools the outside the original Confederate States footprint. Temple can't be feeling any better about the direction of the AAC. This latest round in G-5 expansion shows us how far the once respectable Southern Mississippi football program has fallen. Will all this really matter when the NCAA eventually creates another playoff division within D-1 called G-5? You have already seen most of the higher level G-5 schools move on to the Big 12. The goal of the remaining top level G-5 schools to get into the P-5 is like musical chairs. Those available chairs are quickly disappearing. They need to rename the G-5 the FPD (Football Purgatory Division).
