Your best option is refill with freon and have them put dye in it. If it

is a small leak depending on the age of the vehicle and the amount of freon your losing it may be better off recharging every 6 months. Have them replace the Schrader Valve as well since that is cheap and they are prone to leak. They are probably not going to be able to find the leak without the dye and a backlight. If you have to replace the compressor find a mechanic that will let you buy the parts. You need the compressor and the dryer or the compressor will not be warrantied. a freon recharge should be around $140.00. Less than a car payment or the repair if you are wanting to get rid of the vehicle in a couple of years. They do all the work plus parts $700.
