Yep, got to know ^this^ before doing any other troubleshooting.


The compressor has an electromagnetic clutch that allows the compressor pulley to "freewheel" independent of the compressor driveshaft when the system is not calling for cooling. If the clutch is not engaging, the compressor will not spin and therefore will not provide cooling. This could be caused by low refrigerant, or it could be a controls/wiring issue. Alternatively, it's possible for the compressor to seize, in which case the clutch may be engaged, yet unable to spin because the compressor is locked up. That will cause the accessory drive belt to slip over the compressor pulley, and you'll definitely be able to smell the belt heating up/burning if that's the case.
