That sounds like a gradual leak due to seals drying out.


The refrigerant helps lubricate and keep seals pliable, so if the vehicle sits for a while or the AC is used infrequently, the seals can dry out. I've heard it's good to run the AC once or twice a month year round to avoid this (although defrost should do the same thing since it uses the compressor to dry the air).
