You can pick up a Surfboard DOCSIS 3.0 modern for ~$60. But if you want faster service, spend about twice that to get a DOCSIS 3.1 Gigabit modem. I would buy an ARRIS or Motorola modem.

Wireless routers are another investment. Really good "single" routers will cost you $150+. If you have a large house, and need even better coverage, look at a "mesh" network. There are some reasonably priced ones, but they can get expensive.

The modem and router will probably last you ~10 years, so $15/month X 12 months = $180 per year. Over ten years you're paying $1800 just for their modem/router combo.
