Modem/Router question....

I'm not exactly clear on how all this newfangled interwebs witchcraft works, so I need some help.
I am getting ready to change home internet providers (from Shentel to Xfinity). I've always just used the hardware (modem and router combo) that they provide. But from what I understand, it's better to get your own....and Xfinity will charge me an extra 15 bucks a month just to use theirs. So, I want to get my own....so that if I change internet providers, I won't have to worry about getting a new router and modem.
So my question is, Do I need to get a separate router and modem? Like I've said, I always use the combo one that the company provides....but it sounds like it's better to get separate ones.
