The WAC tried the pod (they called them quads) method in the late 90s
and it didn't work out well for them. It is possible conference are worried that history might repeat itself if they try the pod/quad method. Some reasons the 8 schools left the WAC to form the MWC are as follows:
1. Teams were unhappy with which quad they were placed in.
2. Teams and their fans were unhappy that they were selected to be in the 2 quads that rotated every 2 years. It made it tougher for everyone to know which teams were in which division in a given year.
3. Rotating pods/quads make it tougher for teams to develop rivalries with the other members in the division. Rivalries would basically be limited to the 3 other teams assigned to the pod/quad and the 1 team paired for the protected cross-division game.
4. Once a conference grows to a certain number of members, it stops feeling like a conference and it starts feeling more like a confederation. Maybe 16 is that "magic number."
5. Rivalries get impacted since it is unlikely a team will be placed in the same pod/quad with all of its rivals. For example, the BYU-Hawai'i rivalry suffered because they were placed in different quads.
