I don't think it's accurate to say that UNC has failed to show up against UVA over the years, if the implication is that there's a history going back decades of UNC not getting the job done against UVA. For example, we beat UVA in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016. 2017 and 2018 were the years under Fedora that made it clear we were headed in the wrong direction, and 2019 and 2020 under Mack were just wonky games that happen when you're not significantly more talented than the other team. Sometimes you lose two in a row; it happens. I think that comes to an end this year, possibly in a big way. Mack never beat UVA in Charlottesville his first go round, but there were several years he had the better team. Those losses in Charlottesville in the mid-late 90's fall under the category of "sometimes the football Gods are against you," but with the exception the Bunting and the end of the Fedora years, I think UNC has generally shown up and played UVA tough. Sometimes we just didn't win the games.

VT is probably a better example of a team UNC has failed to show up against over the years than UVA, frankly. The hurricane game in 2016 comes to mind for me. I think the two programs are at a crossroads, and there is ALOT riding on the outcome of the game on 9/3. For both programs, this is not just a normal opener. Normally, winning an opener wouldn't have as much of an impact on a coach's future as winning this game would have on Fuentes'. He's really got a lot on the line on 9/3, IMO.
