I do think there's a danger of killing the golden goose
Let's say that Texas and Oklahoma come to the SEC and the other 8 teams just die from the P5 and just became part of the Mountain West. There is a threat that a whole group of customers (their fans) just check out. While the SEC might not see it as their problem, TV executives should.
Anytime you change the product, even if you think it's for the better, you run the risk of alienating customers. I'm sure the Coca-Cola Company thought "New Coke" was going to stop Pepsi in their tracks.
Also, in terms of the SEC. People view the conference a certain way. Changing it by adding OU and UT might not be the windfall they think it will be, even among traditional SEC fans. I'm just one guy, so this is anecdotal, but I love the SEC. But I will be watching less of it now. I'm not boycotting it, just grossed out by it. This is something they don't need to be doing, just because they can.
Sports is based on competition. As a conference, if you reduce your competition and reduce the amount of teams in existence, it might not add up to the win you think it will.
