Remember we went all in after an ACC invite at least once and maybe 2x when we were an independent and had some support, probably more then than we had in the SEC in 2012 but that is just a guess. But we were publicly rejected by the ACC (UNC) and left with a huge amount of egg on our face. And that was public embarrassment only without any political blowback for "leaving UVA behind." IMHO the Beamer bubble would have burst with Marcus Vick had we had to trudge forward with all the baggage of that failed attempt.

I think that we didn't go hard after any unofficial inquiries because there either were none or they were so vague they didn't move the risk/reward needle for the very up on it Steger and Co.
