The old conference model doesn't really matter anymore
The push is to focus even more on the playoffs (big money). And with an expanded field, it's no longer necessary to go undefeated or to win the conference. So that sets up an environment where big games can bring in extra revenue and it won't hurt playoff chances. And bigger conferences create an opportunity for more schedule variety each season (another chance for more money).
This is a whole new model for the college football world. Small round robin conferences no longer make sense. In fact, they are boring in comparison and will not generate as much tv revenue.
