Pretty good loungism I picked up when I was losing 50#


You just can't out-exercise a bad diet.

Ok, well technically you can if you are training for an Ironman or something. My BIL did that and was probably eating 10k calories a day, and four McDonald's cheeseburgers was a snack for him. But he was literally doing things like going on a bike ride from (west) Richmond to Williamsburg and back for his Saturday workout.

But if your idea of exercise is hitting the gym 3x a week for an hour, then no, you can't out exercise a bad diet. Exercise burns a depressingly few number of calories for the effort it takes.

Basically, exercise determines your fitness. Diet determines how fat you are. There are plenty of pudgy fit people, and plenty more skinny out-of-shape people. If you are really trying to be a lean, mean, fighting machine, that takes both diet and exercise.
