But I believe the 4 byes will go to the top 4 ranked Conference Champions, not just the top 4 ranked teams. Last year's Notre Dame team was (I think) ranked 4th after losing to Clemson in the ACC CCG. But under the new system, as a non-conference champion, they wouldn't get a first round bye despite being ranked 4th. The same would have been true for A&M at #5. The 4th bye would have gone to the 6th ranked Big 12 Champ Oklahoma.
