They don't consider the Olympics to be worth a mandatory call-up. Clubs can deny a call-up for Olympic qualifying, but can't deny a call-up for the national team during certain dates. So that's why all our top European players were in Northern Ireland -- we could demand them for that game, but not for the Olympic qualifying tourney.

What's frustrating is that there are MLS teams IN PRESEASON who also refused to release players. So we had our B team in their offseason and still thought we'd be able to win.

US Soccer needs to stop playing nice guy with teams that refuse to let our guys go, though. We've regularly agreed to not call up players for one friendly or another if their clubs are in the middle of a playoff push or something. We need to get some of that respect back at some point and have the clubs agree to release players when they don't have to. If not, we play by the letter of the law and take what we can when we can, no matter what.
