The vast majority of masks out there offer minimal protection at best.
These cheap paper masks that businesses hand out like candy do very little. As a test, go sand drywall with them on and you will see very quickly how little they work.
If people truly wanted to be protected, they would need something like the picture attached. I wear something similar whenever I paint, work in the attic, or deal with drywall. The mask actually creates a seal with minimal leakage around the edges.
