Yup. The last two points are the key
Colder weather = more time indoors.
People don't wear masks at home, or at other peoples' homes.
Put those two together, and you get a drastic increase in spread, masks or not. Once a Patient Zero brings the COVID into their home, the chances of the other people living there catching it goes through the roof. Wearing a mask at your own home, of course, is pointless because so much prolonged exposure is going to do it's thing regardless.
And colder weather means all those things people did outside all summer aren't happening anymore. They're happening inside. Private gatherings are, literally, death.
The reverse was true over the summer in hotter parts of the country. COVID zoomed in the Sun Belt during air conditioning season, and is less there now.
