It was the 80's


Basketball was still king of television sports $$$$, and it wasn't until the late 90's that football conferences started getting more money for football than basketball.

Until 1984, the NCAA controlled all televised college football, and only after Oklahoma/Georgia won their anti-trust lawsuit against the NCAA did the number of games increase and the CFA negotiated a contract for the member schools/conferences. TV rights then dropped when the CFA negotiated the deals until the mid 90's when the conferences began to sell their rights directly to the broadcasters.

Penn State had agreed to join the Big10 in 1990, so at that point, basketball was the driving force of conference TV $$$.
