We didn't shut down to protect people over 60 at least not entirely. We
shut down to prevent the hospitals from being overwhelmed and having to chose who lives or dies. And even then we struggled mightily.
I'm trying not to get too much into divisions by ages b/c I haven't done as much research there. But it seems like the same statements and logic would apply to the flu death rates. It's higher in the older and compromised and lower in younger healthy population (excluding infants). So if the Covid 19 death rate in people under 60 is .1% then the flu death rate in that same population is .05% (just using those numbers as examples).
