Like you, I still view the FCS as DI-AA.


However, for whatever reason people seem to view the FCS as "DII."

I agree with you that it doesn't make sense for JMU to switch subdivisions in football. However, a few years ago the Daily News Record, Harrisonburg's local newspaper, did a couple articles over the summer based on an interview with the school's President and Athletic Director regarding the current state and future of JMU athletics. In one of the article, the AD indicated that JMU turned down invitations from Conference USA and the Sun Belt because they were not the "right geographic fit" given the school's student demographics. Also, it was mentioned that JMU and Delaware had discussions with the MAC about joining the conference. From talking to people who still live in Harrisonburg and affiliated with JMU, it sounds like JMU preferred a football-only membership, but was willing to settle for full membership. Ultimately the deal fell through because Delaware wasn't ready to give up its football rivalry with Villanova. Keep in mind this would have gone down prior to UMass joining as a football-only member and its colorful exit a few years later. Also, JMU's decision to expand its football stadium with an option to easily expand it again in the future. These little things put together would suggest JMU is not ready to give up its dream to switch football subdivisions.
