Tivo question

Any of you still use Tivo? I'd like to stop paying the cable provider for their box, and am considering buying a Tivo. They now advertise Tivo for cable customers, or Tivo for OTA. I'm not yet cutting the cord, but will consider doing so if my cable provider doesn't come down on price for our renewal. So I'm assuming if I buy the Tivo-for-cable option, I can always go to strait-streaming and use Tivo to record the "broadcast"? Skipping commercials is a must.

Anyone experience this route? Thanks!
