Check the subscription prices of the OTA and Cable TiVos. Also...

...recommend only making one move, specifically to either just replace your cable's DVR or to do a streaming option. Don't think the two TiVos are interchangeable.

The monthly channel guide for the OTA model is half the monthly price of the Cable version, and you really don't need the cable version if you're transitioning to a streaming option. YouTube TV and PSVue have channel guides and "cloud DVRs" to handle those TiVo functions. Believe the OTA guide only covers the OTA channels you get in your area, thus it's reduced price.

The primary advantage of a OTA TiVo is that you are recording uncompressed video feeds, in the highest resolution offered. Probably not a big deal for your typical shows, but if you have a large screen 4K television, and your watching OTA shows being broadcast in 4K (like the Super Bowl), you'll probably see the difference.

But you could get away with doing away with a TiVo or DVR all together by just subscribing to a streaming service, since they typically carry your local ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox & PBS channels. You also won't get the other channels that piggy back on those networks. For example, I think I get 5 PBS channels OTA.

If you want to wait, there will be one more option to the OTA TiVo coming down the pike, and I don't think you'll have to subscribe to get a channel guide like you do with TiVo. Amazon has a DVR, but the current version only does 720p@60fps. It doesn't work smooth like the TiVo, but I'm sure that will change with future versions of both hardware and software. One neat thing about this option is that you'll be able to stream video to any TV in the house with a Amazon device (i.e. FireStick), or to any mobile device with a FireTV Mobile App. It has a lot of potential, but it's probably worth waiting for the next version.
