I used a tivo box (no cable box) for several years

I had to pay the cable company a few dollars per month for "cable cards" that would fit into tivo box (like a smaller old-school 3.5" disk drive), but other than that, it was a very similar service. i was paying for Tivo anyway, and it was cheaper to not have to rent cable box, which drove me nuts. The one drawback to not having a cable box was inability to get pay per view from cable. With amazon prime / netflix, that may not make a difference any more. I loved Tivo, especially for slow mo, seven second rewind, and single frame advance. Wife wanted to ditch it three years ago, so we went straight to cable box. Now we use youtube TV with no box - just router. Tivo was the most user friendly that I've seen, and I love the remote.
