You can't just look


at starting salary. What will that education get you over your lifetime versus not having it?

Not just in $$$, but in working conditions, prestige, etc. If everyone wants the working conditions and prestige of non trade jobs that college is supposed to provide, then the cost of obtaining that is going to go up and there will be a greater supply of those people - lowering salaries - until the salaries are low enough that the education cost is prohibitive. This leaves out the funding source of the loans which also complicates things.
