I also wonder how much of this is due to social media and marketing
There are ads running now for SoFi that are the most offensive crap I have ever seen in advertising. Their message to Millennials is it's not your fault, the world did this to you, come borrow from us.
In addition you have the whole social media stupidity where the things stupid people say (the whiny complainers) get magnified and there is a perception that they are the voice of all.
Doesn't help them either that they grew up during a time of unprecedented growth and prosperity, even the recession that happened in their early life was a non-issue to most of them. Life growing up for anyone in lower middle class and up was pretty damn easy so they didn't have to learn how to deal with adversity on a grand scale.
Reality, most Millennials pay their bills, go to work, work hard like the rest of us. They have some traits that make us old folks shake our heads like their neck beards and BCDs (vets will understand that), but we had traits that our parents shook their heads at as well.
