If you have a kid finishing 7th grade right now (as I do) the current ...

projections for 4 years of in state tuition in Virginia is over $120k and reality is that it will likely exceed $125k as I have found the estimates low for my first two kids.

That is some crazy shiRt. I am very fortunate to be able to provide college tuition to my kids. I also make them fund all of their own spending money in college via high school and college jobs so that they are vested in the experience as well. I also know that you can reduce costs and end up with the same degree by using community college for the first year or two but I don't want to deny my kids the full college experience. I think that helps them grow and mature and ends up being as valuable as the classroom education.

But holy crap! As Dr. Steger wisely stated, the current financial model of higher education is not sustainable. The middle class has already effectively been priced out and student loans are already a GIANT weight on the country that will become a crisis soon.

Please don't take this on a political tangent - this is a financial discussion. I know there are tons of proposals out there on how to address this and I am hoping we avoid discussing any of them. I am simply talking about what this does to family budgets, etc. I saw the post earlier about college enrollment shrinking for the first time (though not at VT apparently) and started thinking about this topic. At some point something has to give or costs will exceed $250k for four years at public universities.

PLEASE no politics!
