assuming conference commissioners don't have their own version of "coach speak." The only reason I thought that the Pac-12 may have informally reached out at some point is because I assumed the Pac-12, like any business, did its due diligence prior to making the business decision. At least I don't think you will find too many businesses make a major business decision without doing some level of comparative analysis. It is possible that all that was done prior to Larry Scott's arrival. At least that could explain why Scott may have not talked about any informal discussions.

Regardless of how things went down, I think I would have enjoyed being a fly on the wall during the various conversations because it could be very enlightening on how the Pac-12 ended up in its current situation. The additional knowledge could even lead someone to reach the conclusions that going alone was the Pac-12's best option. As a result, it would show just how powerful the East Coast Market really is and add on to the frustration with how slow the ACC jumped on board the conference network train.
