I tried to inject some realism into my fantasy


Put aside the near certainty that what I propose would never happen because there are too many people who would have to sign on to the plan. Beyond that, you have to deal with several problems.

1. It is reasonable to assume that you won't be able to get rid of any existing P5 school, for any reason.
2. You want to maintain as many significant rivalries as you can.
3. You want to provide schools the chance to maintain at least one non-divisional rivalry if they so choose.
4. There are some rivalries between "group of 72" teams and "not-72" teams that folks may want to preserve; for example, Notre Dame-Navy.
5. Many schools are going to want to maintain a 7-game home schedule (i.e., have a "buy" game).

As nice as it would be to go with a straight NFL-like model with somewhere around 54 teams, and to allow play only between those school, I think that's even more unlikely than what I propose.
