You can go larger than .22 air rifles.


But you definitely don't want to go smaller (.177) for raccoons.

A high power .22 air rifle will probably do the job, but you'll need to do a head shot. In order to do that, you should look for a rifle with a good trigger. There are huge differences in triggers, and bad ones will definitely open your target patterns.

As for noise, go with a heavier pellet, hopefully something large enough to keep the speed down below the "crack" threshold. Some rifles have built-in sound suppressors.

But the most important piece of advice I can provide is to make sure of your backstop before you pull the trigger.
