Conferences don't win championships

Stech, conferences don't win championships. Individual teams win championships.

Earning more media dollars than the other conferences allows the SEC and the B1G to attract quality coaches (including assistants) and build dazzling facilities which will lure talented recruits. That's for all of the schools in the conference. It enables them to operate the athletic departments without taking financial help from the institution or student fees. It enables them to fund a variety of non-revenue sports at a competetive level. There will a last place team in every conference, every year. But a school like Rutgers can still offer her recruits state-of-the art facilities while they prepare for the future, in or outside of sports.

It should surprise nobody that money matters. If the discrepancy in revenue grows too large, the number of competetive programs in the high-earning conferences will increase, and the strong programs in the low-earning conferences will be distilled down to to the two ot three perennial powers. Perhaps even down to one (consider Oklahoma in the Big 12).
