Easiest is to lower mowing height to about 1"

That will encourange the plants to leaf and grow out, not up, so you won't get that spindly thin growth that you see now.

Fertilize once it's completely awakened in late spring/early summer, then once again in August, each time with 1 lb of nitrogen / 1000 sf.

Other than that it is relatively maintenance free. You will find that you have to physically divide the lawn from planting beds because bermuda is so aggressive.

You will also want to dethatch (mechanical removal of dead and decaying grass leaf matter) every couple of years.

I recommend warm season grasses especially for people in the south who do not have a reliable irrigation system or do not want to spend hundreds of dollars in water fees to keep their fescue active.

IMO we are too prone to hot/dry spells, especially early in the season, to consider cool season grass unless you are willing to renovate almost every year.
