Lawn Experts: Advice needed on my brown lawn

Qualifier: I just bought and moved into this house in November so I don't know what it looks like in the spring/summer nor do I know what type of grass it is (any guesses would be appreciated).

Any advice to turn my front lawn around? My backyard is fine...perfectly green, already mowed it 3-4 times, looks fine. But my front yard is just completely brown. My first problem probably is that I don't know what type of grass it is and I'm pretty sure its a different type of grass than the back.

But any advice on methods or what stuff to put down to thicken/green it up? Or is this a wait and see since its not even April yet. TIA
